Webster technique is a specific chiropractic protocol used with diversified (manual) adjustments for pregnant women. As your body grows and changes rapidly, its structure and biomechanics are put under constant duress and torsion. Then when you change again after the baby is born, your body also behaves differently over time. If you have multiple children and stresses, your body repeats this cycle.
Chiropractic during pregnancy is such a helpful addition to your other health choices. Any technique of chiropractic adjustments will reduce sacral and pelvic dysfunction as well as increase lower back alignment and proper dynamics. Webster technique is the most well-known assessment for pregnant sacral dysfunction but can actually be used on anyone.
Logan Basic Technique is a long slow release of the sacrum using the ligament system as lever points. Again, this technique can be used on any non-pregnant individual but is especially useful if you do have a baby in your tummy. The sacrotuberous ligament is one of the largest in the body and the sacrum itself involves 5 vertebrae fused together. In millimeters, when it does not rotate and slide properly, you get a locked up feeling which can give you sciatic pain, pain and even increased urinary issues that mimic a UTI (but come up negative in the culture). This last problem, during pregnancy and postpartum, may be fixed. Typically both joints are stuck in the anterior or forward position and need to be adjusted ‘out’. This fixes the mechanics and can provide relief or even eliminate that ‘pee all the time but nothing comes out’ feeling. Counter-nutation is the process of moving the sacrum back; should it be moved forward as in a traditional chiropractic adjustment, the symptoms will not resolve.
Obstetrics has recognized the need for proper pelvic alignment in the positioning of the baby. Dr. Janelle M. Farris, DC also utilizes the round and inguinal ligaments in the front of the body to help align the pelvis. Long slow releases of these ligaments help the body to relax and ‘open up’ for increased balance in the area.
Tearing: The grades of tearing in the pelvic floor are 1-4. Often the mother has not been told the severity of the tear but has been sewn up. These muscles in the perineum are made of skeletal muscle, just like the hamstring. Imagine if you had a tear half-way through the hamstring! Not only would that be taken seriously, can you imagine the change in function and pain. Tearing to deliver your beautiful child is nothing to be embarrassed about and I find women often are, based on symptoms afterward. These muscles are also, obviously involved in sex and they need to be working right. The chiropractors at BE Well do not work directly on the muscles of the perineum, but we know enough to make sure the pelvis, sacrum, and coccyx are in working order so that the nerves have freedom to move and provide the right healing information for the area to heal to the best of its ability. It is no different structurally than getting a neck or back injury aligned.
As mentioned in a different article. The doctors both are here to adjust the mother and are not working on the child in any way. In fact, they both are against ‘turning’ babies which should be done only by a licensed practitioner if there is an issue during birth. There could be a reason, such as a cord issue, for why the baby is not turning and both doctors are both conservatives.
If you have never had chiropractic during pregnancy it is worth an inquiry. The doctors also co-care depending on the need of the mother and have two locations for her convenience. The Franklin location is in Physician’s Plaza adjacent to Williamson Hospital.
