This article focuses on non-genetic connective tissue disorders with an autoimmune link. The definitions (from Wikipedia or WebMD) will show you a common link, and we will explain to you why chiropractic and nutrition are a vital part of getting you to and keeping you in a re-missive state for a better quality of life. You are likely on medicine and anti-inflammatories. The negative side effects of these also are likely causing you to be on more medication. Unwinding the puzzle that is you and your disorder is integral to co-care and a higher quality of life.

Fibromyalgia: a chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain, tenderness, and stiffness of muscles and associated connective tissue structures that are typically accompanied by fatigue, headache, and sleep disturbances; fibromyositis.

Lupus (SLE): is a disease characterized by inflammation of the joints, skin, and internal organs.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA): is a disease in which the immune system attacks the thin membrane called the synovium lining the joints, causing pain, stiffness, warmth, and swelling of the joints, and inflammation throughout the body.

Mixed connective tissue disease: characteristics of several diseases, including lupus, scleroderma, polymyositis, dermatomyositis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Chronic fatigue syndrome: a medical condition of unknown cause, with fever, aching, and prolonged tiredness and depression, typically occurring after a viral infection.

(This disorder actually has a widespread origin: strep throat as a child, Mono, then chronic fatigue related to the Epstein Barr Virus. Other forms of chronic fatigue of ‘unknown origin’ are a life of stress, depletion, improper movement, and nutrition. Dr.J)

All of these disorders have a common denominator, which is thought to be inflammation. However, inflammation is defined as a LOCAL physical condition in which part of the body becomes red, swollen, hot, and painful ***especially in a reaction to an injury or infection. This does not encompass the totality of these conditions. An autoimmune response is related to a disease caused by antibodies or lymphocytes produced against substances naturally present in the body. Again, these disorders all cannot be fully classified as autoimmune. But they can all be classified as a problem that is in the connective tissue.

Connective tissue is the covering or coat of every single muscle in the body. It is the skin of the muscle and connects all the organs in the body and all this to our external skin. In fact, connective tissue gone wrong is scar tissue!

It is our understanding that some disorders and diseases are never truly gone but can only be managed. This would be due to stress, trauma, psychological, or genetic origin. However, baseline health all start from the same place. Regardless of your diagnosis, your life can be improved with direct sunlight, whole food eating, proper nutritional supplementation (and I stress proper, not fad of the month), rebuilding your gland and immune system, good sleep hygiene, walks, stretching, and chiropractic adjustments. If it seems that we are suggesting a full life overhaul, we are. It does not have to be difficult, though. It can be done over the course of a year to two years. After all, this condition has sometimes taken a lifetime to manifest.

The reason that chiropractic adjustments help all these conditions is that the brain tells the nerves to tell the body what to do. When there are stuck areas, areas of the spine that are not moving well, your body cannot function to its fullest potential to heal. And chiropractic care adds movements to these areas, usually the spine, that causes the body to function properly again. Likewise, sometimes the easiest first step is a more physically passive one. Just getting relief and hope back because the body is moving and working better will lead to the next steps of more active care. Having a doctor of chiropractic who understands how the whole body works and that it is a self-healing mechanism to the best of its individual life is crucial.
