Chiropractic: Let us be clear about who we Are and who we are Not as doctors of the chiropractic specialty. All types of doctors can agree that chiropractors do not and should not prescribe drugs or perform surgery. Nor do we, as chiropractors, desire to do this. I would also not like my pediatrician to perform knee surgery or a heart surgeon to perform brain surgery, nor do they want to do this. They chose the specialty they thought would give the most to the world. So did we as chiropractors, for Drs. Greg and Janelle Hutti, it was their first choice. The chiropractic principle has always maintained that the body is a self-healing mechanism. Modern medicine knows this as well, but it is not often practiced. A surgeon knows that while he may re-sew a nerve, he cannot make it heal. Modern medicine also knows that even with all the drugs and vaccines, a virus can morph instantly to overtake a weakened immune system. Likewise, there are a variety of healthcare specialists that now prescribe drugs that are not medical doctors. The system itself is complex and broken, and in it, chiropractic doctors have a place as the voice for the body to do its job naturally. Chiropractors exam and discernment give our world natural choices. The only right answer is patient-first healthcare. Is the procedure being done to the body improving or destroying the patient’s quality of life for the long run? The body is ever-changing. Nothing is a forever answer. The full spectrum of choices and differences in professional opinion is vital.

The World Health Organization definition of traditional medicine is the total of the knowledge, skills, and practices based on the theories, beliefs, and experiences indigenous to different cultures, whether explicable or not, used in the maintenance of health as well as in the prevention, diagnosis, improvement or treatment of physical and mental illness.

My favorite part of this definition is ‘culture.’ In western medicine’s current climate, it is acceptable to take a drug or have surgery to remove body parts for anything and everything. That is a cultural preference. For example, five years ago, it was accepted in the culture of the United States that antibiotics should be given to children with anything so much as viral fever. Chiropractic doctors have always stood in stark contrast to this, and now modern medicine is validating the chiropractic belief system by their actions.

Likewise, ‘spinal manipulation,’ which is specific to our profession only, as a result of credited and proper training, is now being requested by the physical therapy profession. It is only a complement to our profession that medicine realizes a place for it.

The FDA: Food and Drug Administration is the government agency responsible for reviewing, approving, and regulating medical products, including pharmaceutical drugs and medical devices. It also regulates various other products, including food, cosmetics, veterinary drugs, radiation-emitting products, biological products, and tobacco.

Chiropractors understand that food is medicine and human-made drugs are artificial means to provide the effects of certain foods and chemical reactions in the body in a heightened and condensed way.

Every specialty has its place, not the least the philosophy, science, and art of chiropractic care.

In fact, in Eastern medicine, bone setting proceeded all physical medicine.

Bone setting: before the advent of chiropractors, osteopaths, and physical therapists, bonesetters were the main providers of this type of treatment. Traditionally, they practiced without any sort of formal training in accepted medical procedures. Bonesetters would also reduce joint dislocations and re-set bone fractures.

Chiropractors call a joint, especially a spinal joint, that is not dislocated but is not moving correctly: a subluxation. Modern medicine would call this improper biomechanics, imbalances, or nothing (made-up). Yet, the organism, our body is not functioning as it should? So what is the solution?

Disease defined by Wikapeka: a disorder of structure or function in a human, animal, or plant, especially one that produces specific signs or symptoms or affects a specific location and is not simply a direct result of physical injury. The chiropractic profession’s sole focus is the disorder of the structure or function, the cause. Medicine focuses on the symptoms in the definition of disease.

“The doctor of the future will give no medication but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, diet and the cause and prevention of disease.” Edison

Chiropractic in Latin means by hand only. It is a technique that utilizes the body’s own healing power to take care of itself by putting it in the optimal movement to heal.

Chiropractic as a verb: a system of complementary medicine based on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of misalignments of joints, especially those of the spinal column, which are held to cause other disorders by affecting the nerves, muscles, and organs.

The doctor part of chiropractic is first and foremost to know the body well enough and take the oath ‘first not harm.’ Two-thirds of our education prepared us for this one statement. The other third taught us how to treat the body naturally.

The chiropractic study: We must, as part of our doctorate, get a four-year undergraduate degree. In Dr. Greg and my cases, we went to Lipscomb University and the University of Illinois, both tough schools. UofI, in fact, is known for its medical, law, and engineering programs. We take all our pre-medicine courses, the same ones our peers take, right alongside them the whole way. In fact, I am grateful to say as Co-Chairman, with my friend Dr. Jason Konzelmann, MD, of the University Student Health Board, I got to collaborate with every future specialty in medicine. Dr. Greg and I also were in exercise science and kinesiology, respectively. We took all the chemistry and physics. We did not go on to take the MCAT as we wanted to be chiropractors.

From here, medical doctors go on to specialize in pharmacology and diagnostics. They must have extensive residencies because of the danger of the drugs they prescribe. This Is important. A surgical residency is even past this level of education, again because of the danger and discernment needed. This is a good thing.

Doctors of chiropractic go on to four years of school studying diagnostics, radiology, nutrition, biomechanics, and adjusting. We have a shorter residency called a preceptorship. I myself also did 6 internships through the course of my studies because I wanted to be the best chiropractor out there, and nothing teaches you better than experience. I am grateful today to all the doctors of chiropractic who allowed me to learn from them to serve you better. With Dr. Greg being my treating doctor, I am confident in his ability even above my past internships.

Chiropractors are not medical doctors. We are a type of doctor. Accredited by the United States of America and, in our case, the State of Tennessee.

We are here to serve you as naturally as possible, to assess your individual case, and give you true Health – Care, one family at a time.
